The Durango Area
Durango was founded in 1880 when the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad built a track to Silverton and established Durango as the hub of its rail system to transport ore from the mountains to smelters in Durango. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad now only hauls visitors to Silverton, and as of 2009 has been in continuous operation or more than 125 years (128!)
In the winter, there is easy access to five major ski areas including Purgatory (located just 25 minutes north of downtown Durango). Just 35 miles to the west is Mesa Verde National Park known for its Ancestral Puebloan Cliff Dwellings.
Durango hosted the first ever Mountain Bike World Championship in 1990! The 2010 Championship is being held in Canada at Mont Sainte-Anne, located 25 miles outside of Quebec.
Durango is home to the Snowdown Festival, an event including fireworks and a parade. Durango also welcomes the annual Music in the Mountains Summer Music Festival, featuring performances by many of the world's finest classical musicians. For those of you that are bicyclist fans, don't forget the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic. The Durango community invite riders to join the tradition every Memorial Day weekend!
